Protein Timing: Does the 'Anabolic Window' Really Matter?
For years, lifters were told to drink a protein shake within 30 minutes of training or 'lose their gains'. Newer research shows that this so-called anabolic window is much wider than once believed — a few hours either side of training, not a few minutes.
What matters most is your total daily protein intake. For people training regularly, most research supports around 1.6–2.2 g per kilogram of bodyweight per day. Hitting that number consistently will do far more than perfect timing.
Once total intake is covered, distribution helps. Spreading protein across 3–5 meals, with roughly 20–40 g per meal (about 0.3–0.4 g per kg of bodyweight), keeps muscle protein synthesis stimulated throughout the day.
A practical approach: have a protein-rich meal within a couple of hours before and after you train, and include a good protein source at every meal. A shake is simply a convenient way to do that when whole food isn't practical — for example, straight after an early-morning session or between meetings.
